The Galaxy S8 is the first phone with Bluetooth 5, can stream audio to two Bluetooth devices at once

Image
Bluetooth is simultaneously useful and annoying.  It's great when you can get it to work, but the annoyances with Bluetooth audio is why many passed on the jack-less iPhone 7, Moto Z, and HTC U Ultra. Among the many other features of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is Bluetooth 5 support - the first phone to include the new standard. If you're unfamiliar, Bluetooth 5 (officially, there's no version number, like 4.0 had) is a fairly major upgrade from Bluetooth 4.0. It has double the bandwidth speed (2 Mb/s), 4x the range, and support for long-range low energy Bluetooth connections. That extra bandwidth is required for the Galaxy S8's "Dual audio" feature. This allows the phone to stream audio to two Bluetooth headsets or speakers at the same time. You can also adjust the volume for each device independently. It's like sharing an earbud with your friend, except with fewer wires and less bacteria.

Telegram v3.18 adds new voice calls and video compression options

Image
Users of the messaging app Telegram may have noticed an update waiting for them today. This new version, 3.18,  adds in five compression options for videos and the much-requested voice calls. But before we get too carried away on that last one, let's look at the changelog. Telegram Calls are here: secure, crystal-clear, constantly improved by artificial intelligence. We are rolling them out in Europe today, the rest of the world will get calls within a few days. Choose between 5 grades of video compression and preview the quality of your video before you send it. Telegram bases itself on user security and privacy, so it's no surprise that voice calls will receive the same treatment. According to the company, the encryption is based on the one used for Secret Chats and builds upon the key exchange system. Each call will take place over a peer-to-peer (P2P) connection whenever possible and use the best audio codecs to save bandwidth. While the app will adapt to the network c...

Usernames no longer count against the 140 character limit on Twitter

Image
There was some consternation last year as rumors swirled that Twitter was set to drop its long-standing 140-character limit.  The company ended up keeping the limit, but it's been working to make sure you can actually use all 140-characters. For example, Twitter decreed a while back that photos and videos no longer count against the limit. Now, it's doing the same for usernames. Finally.  To understand why this is a big deal, consider the following scenario: You reply to someone on Twitter, then a different person jumps in with a reply, and another person replies after that. Through no fault of your own, you'd now have to reply to three usernames if you want to continue including everyone in the conversation. That could easily take up half the 140 character limit, but those don't count at all anymore. Twitter will only count the text you add to the tweet in the 140-character limit. The official app will list the @names above the tweet for clarity, and tha...

The Galaxy Note7 will return as a refurbished device

Image
The Samsung Galaxy Note7 was one of the most disastrous product launches in recent memory. After launching to rave reviews,  reports of the phone catching fire started to appear, eventually causing Samsung to conduct a global recall. Shortly after, Samsung started selling a 'safe' Note7, only for that model to start catching fire as well. Another global recall was initiated. Samsung later brought in two independent companies to help investigate the problem, and uncovered distinct problems with both the original and re-released models. Now, instead of throwing millions of new and old Note7s in landfills, Samsung will start selling a refurbished Note7 soon. This was already rumored, but now it has been confirmed. Details of the refurb model are scarce, but it is rumored to include a smaller battery to prevent overheating. Samsung says it will work with local regulators and carriers to sell the device. Hopefully the company will share more details soon, including availab...

Facebook is testing new buttons and an option to cache some videos for offline viewing

Image
We're back again with some more changes/tests in the Facebook app spotted by you sharp-eyed readers.  The more obvious of the two is a redesign of the Like, Comment, and Share buttons, but we also have some users who are seeing an option in the App Settings to cache some videos for offline viewing. Good stuff. So the "new" buttons keep the same thumb, bubble, and arrow icons we're all familiar with, only hollowed out. At the moment, the lower contrast with the background makes them a bit more difficult to see, but that's what the accompanying text is for, I suppose.       Also, we have a new toggle that has appeared for some users in the App Settings section. It is a safe assumption that this is to cache videos for offline viewing, for those that haven't disabled autoplay on videos (I highly recommend that you do, by the way). Oddly enough, I had this option on my phone a few days ago, but when I checked this morning, it was missing. The app is even on the...

Google adds 'Free App of the Week' section to the Play Store

Image
Ever since Google started allowing paid apps and games to temporarily go on sale,  we've seen dozens of great deals. Perhaps in an effort to better highlight these sales, Google has added a 'Free App of the Week' section to the Google Play Store. The section can be found by scrolling down on the 'Apps' page of the Play Store, on either desktop or mobile, or simply by clicking the source link at the bottom of the post. Currently the featured app is 'Card Wars - Adventure Time,' with the sale ending in five days.

Facebook Messenger gets reactions and mentions in conversations

Image
Facebook's Messenger is continuing its quest to add as many features as possible.  The latest additions are reactions (which was in testing for a while) and mentions. Both of these will be rolling out across the world "in the coming days". You'll be able to react to any single message in a thread, and choose between seven different reactions to do so. To add a reaction you press and hold any message and then tap to select one of the following emojis that show up: love, smile, wow, sad, angry, yes, and no. Note that those last two ones can also easily be interpreted as "like" and "dislike", respectively, given the fact that they're styled like a thumbs up and thumbs down. While you're in a conversation, you'll see reactions to messages in the lower corner, where you get a summary of how many people reacted. Tapping on that will tell you exactly who reacted how. And when someone reacts to one of your messages, you'll get a small ...

Facebook expands live streaming to desktop site, streaming software is now available for personal profiles

Image
Facebook is trying its hardest to break into online video,  between adding live streaming to the mobile Facebook app to creating a 360-degree video viewer for the Gear VR. Today the company announced another expansion of its Facebook Live feature, this time for the desktop. Firstly, Facebook users can now start a live stream from the desktop site. This can be accessed by clicking 'Live Video' from the top of the News Feed or Timeline. Functionality-wise, there isn't anything different from mobile streaming, at least for now. Secondly, the desktop streaming software (previously only available to Facebook pages) is now accessible to all profiles. I'm not sure if most gamers would choose Facebook Live over Twitch or YouTube, but Facebook seems to think a few will. You can find more information about the Facebook Live changes at the source link below. Facebook

Super Mario Run is out on the Play Store [APK Download]

Image
Super Mario Run is Nintendo's second smartphone game, the first being Miitomo.  The company no doubt annoyed some Android users when it announced Super Mario Run at the iPhone 7 launch event, only promising that the game would be available for Android at some point. Now the game has finally arrived on the Play Store.    Super Mario Run on Android is starting on version 2.0, which includes four colored Yoshis as additional playabale characters. The Android version shares the same pricing model as the iOS release - it is free to try, but accessing the whole game will require a one-time purchase of $9.99. Many iOS players have argued that the game doesn't provide enough content, and for an endless runner, I would have to agree. You can download Super Mario Run from the Play Store.

Instagram 10.12 allows you to save live video after broadcasting it

Image
Instagram Live is one of several ways to live stream from your phone,  but it always had one catch - you couldn't save the broadcast after it was over. Both Periscope and YouTube mobile streaming support this feature. Thankfully, Instagram now allows you to save live video after the broadcast is over.       After your broadcast has finished, tapping the new Save button in the top-right corner will save a copy of the video to your device. That's pretty much it. You can get Instagram 10.12 from the Play Store at the link below.

More images and European pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus leak

Image
Technology leaks aren't uncommon in the first place,  but pre-launch pictures and information regarding Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus in particular have been hugely abundant. We've seen press shots, we've seen live pictures and videos; hell, we've even seen leaked documents from other devices confirming some highly-anticipated features. Now, serial leaker @ evleaks has spilled some more pictures of the S8 lineup, as well as some pricing details. In this picture, we can see both the 5.8" S8 and the 6.2" S8 plus. The S8s are on the top row, while the S8 pluses are on the bottom. It would've been pretty hard to distinguish them without Evan's description, but the S8 plus, like most larger variants of phones, has slightly smaller bezels than the standard S8. The 18.5:9 aspect ratio is apparent here, as are the lack of a Samsung logo (finally!) and hardware keys, the rounded edges, and the slightly curved screens. The color...

Nigerians Has Spent 3.66 Trillion Naira On Calls And Data In 2 Years - NCC

Image
Nigerians are really consuming alot in calls and data as Nigeria Communication Commission,  NCC said at the commision headquarters in Abuja that Nigerians had spent 3.66 Trillion Naira on telecommunication services in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Prof. Umar Dambatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, said; Nigerian spent  $5.6 billion in 2015 and $6.6 billion in 2016 which is making $12.2 billion ( 3.6trillion naira) on calls and data at an average rate of 300Naira. Today when we talk of messaging, we think of smartphone apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger,  but it wasn’t long ago that people sat at their desktop computer logging onto MSN Messenger or some obscure web-based chat room. Mobile technology has allowed the concept of “instant messaging” to progress much further than we imagined back in the 90s and early 2000s and its popularity has also soared.  Did you know in 2016, mobile messaging had a worldwide active user base of 1.4 billion, a 31.6% increase from 2015? By 2018 a staggering 80% of all smartphone users are expected to be regular messaging users. Believe it or not the most popular app is not based in the United States. Instead, we look to China and WeChat, which has 1.1 billion users made up of the vast populations in Asia and the East. China, Iran, and Japan are its most popular countries. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger both have around 1 billion users while Israel’s Viber has 800 million and Japan’s Line has 7...

WhatsApp's Interesting old text-based statuses are back in the latest beta

Image
Last month, WhatsApp turned its app into a Snapchat clone by overhauling the entire concept of statuses.  Forget short text and emoji blurbs, now you were supposed to share photos and images with others and follow minute-by-minute to see who snooped on your image and, more importantly, who didn't. Because they want to make a point and prove they don't care enough about you. While the Status tab is still there and unremovable (ugh), the regular old text-based statuses are back in the latest beta for those of us who aren't hip or interesting or vain enough to share a new image every day. Just like before, you can find your own status and edit it under your profile settings at the bottom in the About and phone number section. And you can see the statuses of other users in their profile page in the same place.   I'm back to being a "Government authorized drug dealer" (read: pharmacist) and that makes me giddy. To enjoy these simpler times, grab the lates...

Snapchat 10.4 beta lets you add friends to the home screen, if they have a Bitmoji [APK Download]

Image
Some messaging applications allow you to add shortcuts for contacts to the home screen,  and now Snapchat has added a variation of that feature. Snapchat 10.4 beta allows users to create home screen widgets for their friends, but only if they have a Bitmoji. Once you have the 10.4 beta, simply open the list of widgets on your launcher, and you'll find two from Snapchat. One is a 4x1 widget of your most-contacted Snapchat friends, and the other 1x1 widget allows you to manually pick a friend. Tapping on the widget opens a new conversation with that person, where you can easily send messages and Snaps.       Both widgets can be resized beyond their default sizes, as you can see in the third screenshot above. In fact, you can make one fill your entire home screen if you want. As mentioned above, only friends with Bitmoji connected to their Snapchat accounts can be added to the home screen - a strange requirement, but whatever. To try out this beta, you can ...

BlackBerry announces the Aurora smartphone in Indonesia

Image
There's a new BlackBerry smartphone, but it's not the recently announced KEYone.  BlackBerry fans in Indonesia will soon have access to a BlackBerry device developed exclusively for them. It's called the Aurora, and pre-orders are available now. BlackBerry signed a deal to make TCL its exclusive hardware partner in most of the world. There are several markets where BlackBerry will continue to work with other device makers, and Indonesia is one of them. Indonesia is one of BlackBerry's biggest markets—it was selling classic BB OS devices in Indonesia long after demand had died down in the rest of the world. The Aurora is still an Android device, though. It'll ship with Android 7.0 with the DTEK security suite included. It has a 5.5-inch 720p display, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage with a microSD slot, a Snapdragon 425, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It was manufactured by an Indonesian company called BB Merah Putih. So, the specs are modest, but so is the price. The...

Google's new Invisible reCAPTCHAs won't show a checkbox to humans

Image
Various CAPTCHA systems have been in existence over the years,  often as a source of frustration (and jokes) to actual humans trying to complete online forms. Google's own implementation, called reCAPTCHA V2, replaces the old squiggly-word boxes with a simple checkbox. Now the company is taking reCAPTCHA a step further, by ditching the checkbox all together - in most cases. Google's reCAPTCHA uses several variables to determine if the user is a human or an automated bot (based on mouse movement, IP, etc). If it thinks the user is human, only clicking the checkbox is required. Otherwise, the user would be prompted to complete a basic puzzle - selecting all the street signs in a group of images, for example. Google's new Invisible reCAPTCHA simply removes the need for people to check the box. If the algorithm isn't completely sure if you're a person, you'll still get a puzzle, but it's still an improvement. Web developers wanting to switch to Invisib...

WhatsApp beta separates voice and video call actions, relocates attachment icon

Image
The latest WhatsApp beta 2.17.93 has made a couple of changes that do seem small on the surface,  but that should make it easier to initiate calls and share attachments in the app. The most obvious change is the new attachment button placement in the text box, next to the camera. You won't have to reach out to the top of the screen to send a document, location, contact, or some sort of media anymore. And it makes a lot more sense: now everything you can share in a chat is there in the bottom row: attachments, camera (which gets a new icon), and voice messages. The attachment overlay also shows on the bottom of the screen now.   Attachment icon moved from the top title bar (old, first) to the bottom text box (new, second). The empty icon space left in the top title bar is filled by a standalone video call button. Instead of tapping the call icon first then choosing between voice and video calls, the two are now separate and you can quickly initiate whichever one yo...

Facebook introduces the stories-like Messenger Day

Image
Facebook is continually adding features to its Messenger platform,  which is great for the many who use it. This time around brings us stories... er, I mean Messenger Days, which are "temporary" photos or videos that your friends can see and reply to. They disappear after twenty-four hours, or you can delete them before then if you so choose. Once you're on the latest update, you can get started by jumping into the full-screen camera or by ticking "My Day" in your inbox. This is your chance to snap a photo or video, after which you can add effects. Once you're satisfied, you can then share that picture or video to your Day, save it to your phone, or send it to someone or a group of someones. You can also add to your Day straight from a conversation with a friend. There will be some "Add to your Day" text under a photo or video. It's pretty self-explanatory what happens from there. Facebook is also giving users control over who can see...

Twitter announces new tools for filtering, muting, and reducing harassment

Image
Twitter has always been a little more... unregulated than other social networks,  but it's gotten a bit more toxic in the last year or two. The company has today announced some tools that could make it more tolerable. Twitter will proactively tackle abusive behavior even when it's not reported, and the app will gain some new tools to make it easier to sweep unpleasant tweets under the virtual rug. The Twitter app will soon gain much more robust notification options. These advanced filters support ignoring pings from accounts without an avatar, phone number, or verified email. That should cut down on spam. Muting will be more powerful as well with the ability to block Tweets that include certain words or phrases for as long as you want. You can also choose to only mute those tweets from people you don't follow. When you report content on Twitter for harassment, the app will now be aware of those reports. The notification tab will alert you when reports have been re...

YouTube TV is official, includes 40+ networks for $35/month

Image
YouTube or Google offering traditional TV networks has been rumored for ages, and now it is finally official.  Today Google unveiled 'YouTube TV,' a new subscription service offering dozens of TV networks, cloud DVR, and YouTube Red originals for just $35 a month.  Obviously the library of TV networks will make or break YouTube TV, but Google is off to a pretty good start. YouTube TV includes ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, and dozens of other local sports and cable networks (see the below picture for all of them). Showtime and Fox Soccer Plus are available for an additional charge. Google's aim is to make watching TV more like watching YouTube, so one of the big selling points is Cloud DVR. Much like Xfinity and similar TV providers, recordings of shows are kept online for easy access. There is no storage limit or simultaneous recording limit, but recordings are deleted after nine months. There are a few additional benefits to YouTube TV worth mentioning. You...

Gmail users can now receive attachments up to 50 megabytes, sent files still limited to 25

Image
Email really isn't designed to handle massive files being sent along with messages...  but then, since the standard has been in use for decades, it's been modified in a lot of ways that weren't originally intended. Today Google is expanding email's capabilities some more, at least in terms of the Gmail system. According to the latest Gsuite blog post, Gmail users can now open attachments in incoming mail of up to 50 megabytes in size. Keep in mind that this is only for Gmail (though other email systems may have similar or greater tolerances), and only for incoming mail, at least for the time being. Gmail still has a hard limit of 25MB for anything attached to an outgoing message or reply. (Note: the limit also applies to the combined total size of all attachments: you can't send two 25MB files in the same email, or receive two 50MB files.) The blog post makes it clear that Google would very much prefer you to use Drive for your larger files (which allows...
