More images and European pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus leak

Image
Technology leaks aren't uncommon in the first place,  but pre-launch pictures and information regarding Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 plus in particular have been hugely abundant. We've seen press shots, we've seen live pictures and videos; hell, we've even seen leaked documents from other devices confirming some highly-anticipated features. Now, serial leaker @ evleaks has spilled some more pictures of the S8 lineup, as well as some pricing details. In this picture, we can see both the 5.8" S8 and the 6.2" S8 plus. The S8s are on the top row, while the S8 pluses are on the bottom. It would've been pretty hard to distinguish them without Evan's description, but the S8 plus, like most larger variants of phones, has slightly smaller bezels than the standard S8. The 18.5:9 aspect ratio is apparent here, as are the lack of a Samsung logo (finally!) and hardware keys, the rounded edges, and the slightly curved screens. The color...

Google's new Invisible reCAPTCHAs won't show a checkbox to humans

Image
Various CAPTCHA systems have been in existence over the years,  often as a source of frustration (and jokes) to actual humans trying to complete online forms. Google's own implementation, called reCAPTCHA V2, replaces the old squiggly-word boxes with a simple checkbox. Now the company is taking reCAPTCHA a step further, by ditching the checkbox all together - in most cases. Google's reCAPTCHA uses several variables to determine if the user is a human or an automated bot (based on mouse movement, IP, etc). If it thinks the user is human, only clicking the checkbox is required. Otherwise, the user would be prompted to complete a basic puzzle - selecting all the street signs in a group of images, for example. Google's new Invisible reCAPTCHA simply removes the need for people to check the box. If the algorithm isn't completely sure if you're a person, you'll still get a puzzle, but it's still an improvement. Web developers wanting to switch to Invisib...

Beware of a Devious Gmail Scam Circulating NOW

Image
There’s a particularly nasty phishing scam that’s been doing the rounds this January,  and it’s targeting Google’s Gmail account users. The scam, purported to be one of the most pernicious yet, tricks email users into divulging their Google log-in details and has even fooled seasoned IT experts. Here’s how it works – you have been warned! A fake email arrives in your inbox. It may well come from a contact in your own address book, and will contain a rogue attachment that looks like a PDF file. When you click on the attachment, you will be directed to a phishing page which is cleverly disguised as the Google sign-in page, where you are asked to log into your account. The super cautious user will now take a look at the location bar which shows the following: Being reassured that it says accounts.google.com, you proceed to sign in. If you enter your details, your Gmail account will become compromised, allowing the attacker to go through your messages, message folders and pas...

The next wireless standard is officially "5G," and it has a logo

Image
The next standard for wireless connectivity has been in development by the 3GPP cellular standards group for some time now, and won't be ready for a while yet - at least not until 2018. But now the group has officially adopted "5G" as the name going forward, and created the above logo for it. Why is this important, you ask? Mostly because it's called 5G, and not another iteration of the existing 4G LTE branding. This should make it easier for general consumers to understand, as opposed to the recent LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro standards. The technology itself is still years away from rolling out, with the 5G Phase 1 specifications due sometime in late 2018. While the exact definition has not been finalized, 5G is expected to focus more on higher capacity than the faster speeds 4G introduced. This should help tremendously, especially with smartphones becoming more accessible and the Internet of Things trend taking off.

Note7 fires were caused by defective batteries, not a design flaw or firmware issue -Reuters

Image
The saga of the Galaxy Note7 was one of the most surprising and disastrous events in the tech industry last year.  The Note7 received very positive initial reviews, but soon after, several reports of the device catching fire were made public. After acknowledging that the problem was with the Note7, Samsung began recalling all units. To make matters worse, Samsung started production of a new 'safe' model shortly afterwards, only for those devices to start catching fire as well. Finally, the company threw in the towel and completely shut down production. But the story of the Note7 still isn't finished, as Samsung has yet to officially announce the results of its investigation of the actual cause. The investigation has concluded, Reuters reports, and found that the battery itself was the main cause of the fires. While you might think that is the obvious answer, there was speculation that the Note7's design or firmware was to blame. A source also told Reuters t...
