YouTube mobile streaming is open to all, no longer has a subscriber requirement

Image
The ability to Go Live on YouTube (not to be confused with the entirely unrelated YouTube Go )previously required that you have 1,000 subscribers, and before that the requirement was set at 10K. In a bid to compete with other services , it looks like that limit has been dropped further, all the way to zero. That's right, now everyone can Go Live on YouTube without any subscribers. The only requirements are a verified channel and no live stream restrictions in the last 90 days. The new feature is found via the FAB when you open the YouTube app. Give it a quick tap, and you'll be taken to a screen from which you have the option to either record, as normal, or Go Live with streaming content. Make sure your account is verified, or you might not see it. There might be a roll out of some kind since it isn't on my phone quite yet, but our own Artem sees it on his. I watch a ton of live content on platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming, and I really think th...

Telegram 4.0 brings the full launch of the Instant View Platform, bot payments, and video messages

Image
Telegram is my favorite messaging platform. It's secure, ubiquitous across operating systems, and feature-rich. More things get added all the time to the service, such as voice calls and themes, that bring it closer to its competitors like Whatsapp. v4.0 has landed and it brings a few things of note. First of all, here's the changelog: Video messages. Tap the mic icon to switch to camera mode, then tap and hold to record stylish video messages. Swipe up while recording for hands free mode (works with voice notes). Meet Telesco.pe , where anyone can view video messages from public channels — no Telegram account required. Bots can now accept payments from users. The Instant View Platform is now public and will soon support thousands of websites, including your favorite ones. Recording stylish video messages is different than video calling, which has not been introduced yet (though voice has been). It works pretty seamlessly, all things considered. ...

Security firm Check Point says millions infected with botnet malware via Play Store

Image
The conventional wisdom is that limiting your app downloads to the Play Store will help you avoid malware. That's true for the most part, but every now and then we hear about something sketchy that fell through the cracks. For instance, the security firm Check Point says that a number of "game guide" apps in the Play Store were hiding malicious code, and they may have accumulated millions of downloads. Check Point has named this malware "FalseGuide" in recognition of its presence exclusively in guide apps. These apps are a quick way to get malware out there as there's very little development needed, and the malware can piggyback on the popularity of an established game. When FalseGuide is installed, it does something unusual—it requests administrator access. This makes it more annoying to uninstall, but the user does have to manually okay this feature. Not everyone will do so. When it's run by the user, FalseGuide registers with a Firebase Cloud Messagin...

App Cloner updated to 1.4.0, you can now clone WhatsApp and limited Gmail and Chrome support

Image
One of the problem of App Cloner specifically noted was incompatibility with WhatsApp.  Well, the update to 1.4.0 brings with it precisely that support, and that is a very good thing. Which means that you can now clone your what's app. If you happen to use multiple accounts for the service, for instance in the case of multiple SIMs, instead of having to go to the effort to manually switch (which can cause issues), now you can keep multiple instances installed and have each associated with its own account. Then there's no concern about missed notifications during periods not signed in on a specific account. It might be a bit niche, but that's a huge convenience. WhatsApp support isn't the only thing that's been updated. Prior to 1.4.0 apps like Chrome and Gmail would fail to work, but in the latest version they've been given some limited functionality when duplicated. The major caveat being that neither works directly with a Google account on duplicated inst...

Android overtakes Windows to become world most popular OS for Internet usage

Image
Without much doubts, you’ll all agree that Android OS is a powerful OS that powers billions of devices all over the world.  Well, there is a new report from StatCounter, that Android has surpassed Windows as the world’s most popular operating system for browsing the internet. statcounter The report is based on a sample size of over 15 billion page views per month and the mention “Internet usage” is strictly the viewing of website pages. This report does not include app or data usage as part of the results. Android topped the worldwide OS internet usage market share with 37.93% in the month of March, which put it marginally ahead of Windows at 37.91% for the first time. This position represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4% of global internet usage five years ago. StatCounter also called it a milestone in technology history and the end of an era for Microsoft’s dominant OS. The chart above shows overall internet usage market share over the past five y...

Gmail adds Gboard keyboard GIF support [APK Download]

Image
Plenty of apps have been updated recently to add a feature wanted by every meme lover  and person who finds emojis dull and can't express themselves with anything less than an animation: GIF keyboard support. The latest to join the fold is Gmail. You can now search for the GIF your heart desires and insert it right from your keyboard without having to mess with third-party apps. Of course, for this to work, you will need a keyboard that offers GIF insertion like Google's own Gboard. You will also need to be on a supported version of Android, which should be anything above Honeycomb. WHAT'S NEW • You can now easily add animated GIFs to your message using Gboard. • (US only) Send & request money instantly, just tap the attachment icon when composing an email. This change is live in the latest version of Gmail 7.3.13.151698241 which should be available on the Play Store but can also be grabbed manually  Download: Gmail (Play Store)

The Ultimate Guide: Everything You Need to Know About the 5 Biggest Messenger Apps

Image
Today when we talk of messaging, we think of smartphone apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger,  but it wasn’t long ago that people sat at their desktop computer logging onto MSN Messenger or some obscure web-based chat room. Mobile technology has allowed the concept of “instant messaging” to progress much further than we imagined back in the 90s and early 2000s and its popularity has also soared.  Did you know in 2016, mobile messaging had a worldwide active user base of 1.4 billion, a 31.6% increase from 2015? By 2018 a staggering 80% of all smartphone users are expected to be regular messaging users. Believe it or not the most popular app is not based in the United States. Instead, we look to China and WeChat, which has 1.1 billion users made up of the vast populations in Asia and the East. China, Iran, and Japan are its most popular countries. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger both have around 1 billion users while Israel’s Viber has 800 million and Japan’s Line has 7...

Snapchat 10.4 beta lets you add friends to the home screen, if they have a Bitmoji [APK Download]

Image
Some messaging applications allow you to add shortcuts for contacts to the home screen,  and now Snapchat has added a variation of that feature. Snapchat 10.4 beta allows users to create home screen widgets for their friends, but only if they have a Bitmoji. Once you have the 10.4 beta, simply open the list of widgets on your launcher, and you'll find two from Snapchat. One is a 4x1 widget of your most-contacted Snapchat friends, and the other 1x1 widget allows you to manually pick a friend. Tapping on the widget opens a new conversation with that person, where you can easily send messages and Snaps.       Both widgets can be resized beyond their default sizes, as you can see in the third screenshot above. In fact, you can make one fill your entire home screen if you want. As mentioned above, only friends with Bitmoji connected to their Snapchat accounts can be added to the home screen - a strange requirement, but whatever. To try out this beta, you can ...

Gmail users can now receive attachments up to 50 megabytes, sent files still limited to 25

Image
Email really isn't designed to handle massive files being sent along with messages...  but then, since the standard has been in use for decades, it's been modified in a lot of ways that weren't originally intended. Today Google is expanding email's capabilities some more, at least in terms of the Gmail system. According to the latest Gsuite blog post, Gmail users can now open attachments in incoming mail of up to 50 megabytes in size. Keep in mind that this is only for Gmail (though other email systems may have similar or greater tolerances), and only for incoming mail, at least for the time being. Gmail still has a hard limit of 25MB for anything attached to an outgoing message or reply. (Note: the limit also applies to the combined total size of all attachments: you can't send two 25MB files in the same email, or receive two 50MB files.) The blog post makes it clear that Google would very much prefer you to use Drive for your larger files (which allows...

The Refresh button for Play Store updates is now in testing

Image
One of the more annoying aspects of the Play Store is that you can't manually check for app updates.  We already covered how Google is testing a new installed apps screen, but we didn't get a look at one of the best aspects of it - a refresh button. Previously, restarting the Play Store app or switching activities was required to trigger a refresh. As you can probably figure out, pressing the button checks for app updates, and it only appears if you don't already have updates available. You can see the feature in action in the GIF below: It's not clear when (or if) these user interface changes will be pushed to all users. In the meantime, you can try making a sacrificial offering to Google.

Kodi 17 'Krypton' is now available, with a new default skin and many under-the-hood changes [APK Download]

Image
Kodi, perhaps better known by its former name XBMC, is one of the most popular media centers around.  It's open source, cross-platform, and is endlessly extendable - what's not to love? Now Kodi 17, codenamed 'Krypton,' is live on the Play Store with thousands of new features and bug fixes. Probably the most notable change is the new default theme. 'Estuary' (shown above) is the new default skin on most platforms, replacing the years-old 'Confluence' skin. On touch screen devices, there's a slightly-modified version of Estuary called 'Estouchy,' shown below. The 'Estouchy' theme on Kodi 17. Besides the new look, there is a massive number of under-the-hood changes, especially with Kodi's Live TV/PVR and media playback. Kodi's video player core has added support for new codecs, subtitle formats, and add-ons. Kodi 17 also has some noteworthy Android-only changes. The minimum Android version has been moved from Andr...

Viber makes calls free between the US and countries affected by Trump's immigration ban

Image
Viber has been around as a VoIP solution on mobile devices for ages,  but it also has a service called Viber Out that lets you call landlines. It usually costs money to do that, but not in select scenarios right now. Viber has announced that calls between landline and mobile numbers in the US and the seven countries affected by Donald Trump's controversial immigration ban will be free. I'm sure you don't need the full rundown of current events here on Lordxdonval. The gist is that all individuals from seven Middle East and African nations have been banned from entering the US. The Executive order came down late on Friday, causing confusion and protests over the weekend. Here's Viber's statement on the matter. "In light of recent events in the United States, we are now offering free calls to any landline or mobile number between the United States and Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen so that those affected will now have one less barrier...

Netflix Has added support for downloading content to SD card

Image
Netflix adds support for downloading content to SD card After years of waiting, Netflix finally added support for saving content for offline viewing last year. But until now, that was limited to the device's internal storage. The latest update, version 4.13, now supports downloading content to an external SD card. To check where Netflix is saving offline content, go to 'App Settings' at the bottom of the hamburger menu, then tap 'Download Location.' At least on my tablet, SD card was set as the new default location. The Netflix update does not appear to be a staged rollout, so it should be live for everyone on the Play Store already. If you prefer, the update is also available below

Top Features started showing up for more users on the Play Store

Image
Google always seems to be tweaking reviews in the Play Store,  changing how they're presented to users and trying to make it easier to see how an app/game fares and how users perceive it. We've been seeing Review Highlights, detailed Feature Ratings for games that divide the rating by controls, gameplay, and graphics, and more. One of the tweaks is Top Features, a list of the best features a given app has, approved by users who give it a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. Top Features started showing up back in August of 2016, but it seemed to be limited to certain users before (mostly in the US from our anecdotal evidence). Based on tips we've been getting over the past few hours, it looks like Top Features has been expanded to more users, or at least more regions. It's not showing up for everyone yet — both my Android phones don't show Top Features for any apps, even the super popular ones like Instagram and Twitter.   The feature doesn't seem to be tang...

There are a variety of activities that we conduct every day in the office, so right now, let's focus only on one — dealing with PDF documents. The Portable Document Format, or PDF, has been with us for almost 30 years. And after all that time, it’s still the most popular file format on the Internet. Even though it has changed a lot over the past two decades, its main characteristics stayed the same.
