Hidden all the way at the right end of the Google search app's tabs is 'In Apps' search.  As you might guess from the name, it allows you to search within the apps installed on your phone. Now Google has added Firebase App Indexing to the Drive Android app, allowing you to find your documents straight from the Google search app. Once you have the latest Drive update installed, you should see your files appear along with results from other apps. Tapping the 'More' button will launch you into the Drive app for a more detailed view of the results. While Google says that only the latest Drive update is required, there might be a server-side component that is still rolling out. If you don't have it right now, just wait a day or two

If you're a Telegram user (hi), then you'll understand how cool this latest news is.  The privacy-focused messaging service is finally getting custom theme support on Android, which is just fantastic. You have three basic ones to start, and one of those is dark theme.  Other than that, you get the standard default theme — you know, the one we've all been staring at for a while. The final one is blue, which feels slightly redundant, but, I think that it looks quite nice. In what appears to be a server-side update to the service,  WhatsApp has announced a new "statuses" feature today that really isn't about chat status so much as it is a rip-off of Snapchat's Stories (which was earlier ripped off by Instagram last year) If you know what Snapchat Stories is, you know what today's WhatsApp update is: it really is that similar. Take a look at the screenshots below. WhatsApp statuses expire after 24 hours, you can place pictures, videos, or GIFs in them, and they can then be personalized with emoji, text, and drawings. It even has a Snapchat-like "seen by" counter. WhatsApp also assures you that, just like your messages, statuses are end-to-end encrypted. It's not hard to imagine we'll eventually see filters and scenes here a la Snapchat, too. The new feature is rolling out to all platforms for WhatsApp today, though not everyone has it just yet. One of the more annoying aspects of the Play Store is that you can't manually check for app updates.  We already covered how Google is testing a new installed apps screen, but we didn't get a look at one of the best aspects of it - a refresh button. Previously, restarting the Play Store app or switching activities was required to trigger a refresh. As you can probably figure out, pressing the button checks for app updates, and it only appears if you don't already have updates available. The next standard for wireless connectivity has been in development by the 3GPP cellular standards group for some time now, and won't be ready for a while yet - at least not until 2018. But now the group has officially adopted "5G" as the name going forward, and created the above logo for it. Why is this important, you ask? Mostly because it's called 5G, and not another iteration of the existing 4G LTE branding. This should make it easier for general consumers to understand, as opposed to the recent LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro standards. The technology itself is still years away from rolling out, with the 5G Phase 1 specifications due sometime in late 2018. While the exact definition has not been finalized, 5G is expected to focus more on higher capacity than the faster speeds 4G introduced. This should help tremendously, especially with smartphones becoming more accessible and the Internet of Things trend taking off.

One of the more notable features of Android 7.1 is the ability for keyboards to directly insert GIFs into an application.  However, both the keyboard and target application have to be updated to handle the new functionality. Thankfully, Twitter has now done so with version 6.33.0-beta.556. To use this feature, you will need a compatible keyboard (like Gboard), a device running Android 7.1 or later, and the latest Twitter beta release. Once you have all that, inserting GIFs should come up as an option on the keyboard.    Just like the existing GIF button in the Twitter app, this works with both tweets and DMs. I expect this will arrive in the non-beta Twitter app with the next update.
